Design for a Difference 2019 – Special Places Deserve Great Spaces

March 25, 2020

Design for a Difference is a nationwide movement that couples socially conscious interior designers together with other businesses to makeover much-needed spaces at local charities. When the opportunity arose to participate in Milwaukee’s first Design for a Difference Project, I jumped on board. The recipient for 2019 was Walkers Point Youth and Family Center.  Through site visits, interviews and observation the design team worked together to identify areas of improvement. From this work partnered with staff input, we developed a design concept.

With the challenge accepted, the DFAD team collaborated to find the goods and volunteers to bring the concept to reality. Through the support of local businesses and the generous gift of time from many volunteers, the actual makeover was completed within a 2-week time frame.

Above all, our goal to reinvigorate the 2nd floor living and workspace of the Walker’s Point Youth & Family Center was achieved.  A few examples include completing minor repairs, overall organization, updated furnishings and finishes.  A seasonal color scheme was utilized to nurture a comforting environment for both participants and staff.   What an honor it was to be a part of this amazing team.
